Negril and the very Hedonistic Hedonism II

History of Negril and Hedonism II

Below is a excert from the Lonely Planet about Negril. Hard to believe that Hedonism II has been open that long. We have clients that have been to the resort over 100 times as well as the original owners of

Go Classy Tours.

www.caribbean-hideaways.com

From the LONEY PLANET

Only in 1959 was a road cut to Negril, launching the development of what was then a tiny fishing village. Electricity and telephones came later. The sleepy beachfront village soon became a popular holiday spot for Jamaicans. About the same time, hippies and backpackers from abroad began to appear. They roomed with local families or slept on the beach, partook of ganja and magic mushrooms, and generally gave Negril its laid-back reputation. In 1977 the first major resort – Negril Beach Village (later renamed Hedonism II) – opened its doors to a relatively affluent crowd seeking an uninhibited Club Med–style vacation. Tales of Hedonism’s toga parties and midnight nude volleyball games helped launch Negril to fame. By the mid-1980s Negril was in the throes of a full-scale tourism boom that continues today. (The early days of tourism in Negril are regaled in Banana Shout, a humorous novel by local hotelier Mark Conklin concerning the escapades of an American draft dodger who moves to Negril.)

This let-it-all-hang-out tradition still overflows during the March to April spring break when US college kids swarm for wet T-shirt contests, drinking competitions and general party time.

Nonetheless, the resort has developed an active and environmentally conscious spirit under the guidance of expat residents, resulting in the creation of the Negril Marine Park within the Negril Environmental Protection Area. The park encompasses the shoreline, mangroves, offshore waters and coral reefs, and is divided into eight recreational zones. In 2001 the Chamber of Commerce adopted an environmental ‘green’ standard for hotels to adhere to. Recent projects include a new recycling center – a rarity in Jamaica.

Sandals Emerald Bay

This is not a nude resort, but for luxury and fantastic golf it can not be beat!

Sandals Emerald Bay, Great Exuma, Bahamas and the Sandals Emerald Reef Golf Club were chosen as the next location for the Golf Channel's highly popular television series, Big Break. The entire 13th season of the show was filmed on location at our newest resort and golf club and will be branded as "Big Break SANDALS RESORTS." The Golf Channel has just announced the all-female cast and started running teasers this past week to promote Big Break SANDALS RESORTS. This is an amazing opportunity to showcase our newest property Sandals Emerald Bay, and will also help us place the Sandals Emerald Reef Golf Club on the map with destination golfers.

About Big Break:

Big Break is the Golf Channel's reality television program that airs in 41 million homes across the globe with over 200+ hours of domestic and international programming. Each episode is an hour long and the show is the #1 original programming series on the Golf Channel. This show's premise is to award aspiring professional golfers exemptions into selected events and championship tours. Golfers essentially face each other in a series of competitions to reveal their strengths, weaknesses and mental toughness for prizes on the line. The series debuted in 2003 and has become very popular, spawning 13 subsequent editions and celebrity versions, with the last season shot at Disney.

Did You Know?

Cinchona: The medicine quinine is taken from the cinchona tree grown in Jamaica. The value of quinine in the treatment of malaria fever was known to the Indians of Peru and other American countries from earlier times. It was noticed by the Europeans in 1638 when it cured the Countess Cinchon. The plant was then named in her honour.
