John Issa, chairman of SuperClubs, and Richard Byles, president and CEO of Sagicor Life Jamaica, jointly announced Tuesday that they have reached a deal on the sale of the 226-room Breezes Runaway Bay hotel to the insurance company.

Sagicor will be rebranding the property The Jewel Runaway Bay Resort effective June 1, 2012. Sagicor is also the operator of the Jewel Dunn's River Beach Resort & Spa in St Ann.

The sale marks the return of the hotel to the insurance company's property portfolio. SuperClubs previously bought it from Sagicor in 2003.

The repurchase price was not disclosed.

In a joint statement issued yesterday, SuperClubs and Sagicor said they will be working together to ensure a smooth transition of ownership with no interruption to service. The employees of the hotel will all receive redundancy packages from Breezes and be available for rehire by the new operators.

SuperClubs originally leased the property in 1983 from the Urban Development Corporation through its subsidiary National Hotels and Properties.

SuperClubs now operates 10 properties in four countries, including Breezes Grand Resort & Spa Negril; Breezes Bahamas; Breezes Bœzios Resort & Spa in Brazil; Breezes Varadero; Breezes Bella Costa; Breezes Jibacoa in Cuba; and Hedonism II in Negril. SuperClubs also operates and independently markets affiliate ROOMS resorts in Ocho Rios and Negril, and Negril Beach Villa.

In the joint company release, Sagicor's Byles said that he sees great prospects for the property. "This acquisition increases our investment in the hospitality sector and specifically on the north coast. It is our intention to renovate and expand the hotel," he said.

Times and Rules - they are a changing at .....

Go Classy Tours has been informed that unlike in the past where if you booked into a group the rate would be the same for you entire stay the the following rule will be enforced.  

Effective IMMEDIATELY with all NEW bookings the rule that SuperClubs will enforce is a 3 day pre and a 3 day post stay outside of the group window at the same group rate.  

What does this mean you may ask .... 

This is only an example:  If you are staying for example 14 days and 7 of those days are in the group, the price would be the group rate for 7 days - if you are going in 3 days BEFORE the group starts the price would still be the group - if you are staying 3 days PAST the group, you would still have the group rate - DAY #14 pre or post will be a 1 day rate at what ever the regular rack rate is.

To simplify it even more - if you are going in on THE DAY the group STARTS, 14 days (7 in group + 3 post) will be group rate.  The additional 4 nights will be at what ever the rack rates is at the time.

This was our 1st visit to N. It’s been 3 years since our last visit to Jamaica. GL Braco had been slipping in service so we went elsewhere. With Braco closing there are very few places that we could try and we wanted to return to Jamaica. N was offering what we wanted at a good price so we signed up for a week. This was our 30th trip to Jamaica, most being to Braco and a few being to Hedo and GL Negril. We were looking for a quiet venue and reviews were positive for the most part. We took Jet Blue from Orlando to MoBay about 1hr 45min.

Customs and immigration are much improved, as was baggage. The most irritating part was the waiting for the bus ride as well as the beer stop. Total for this was about 1hr and 30min. I have inquired about a taxi estimate is about $60 to $70 for two. Agree on the price first. A young couple did not and we viewed the major hassle at the front desk on our way to something.

Check In was quick and we were off to room in about 5 minutes. OK First impression was what did we get into. The resort needs maintenance and has lots of plants. Pool area needs work recliners are old shade appears limited as do the number of patrons. As the week went on it did not seem to be as big an item.

Water was hot and pressure usually very good.

I wish I was this talented.

There is something like a single bed on the Lanai with a firm mattress covered by a clean sheet that is very nice to Relax on in the AM for coffee or after a day at the pool prior to dinner. The constant breeze is wonderful. Very easy to talk with your neighbors. Note. The walls are thin.

 Food. All meals are A La Cart, portion size was very nice, and the food quality preparation and taste good. No worry about going home plus 5 lbs. unless you requested seconds. There were two meals at the Italian restaurant both were very good. Daily breakfast was very nice and the smoothies appeared to be very popular. Lunch by the pool had a variety that included burgers, fries, wraps etc. You would not go hungry. Snacks mostly popcorn were put out about 5 PM.

does try to get the guest involved. If you seek shade the pool area is limited as are the number of umbrellas. We did not have a problem because of the low numbers of guest. 

Pool Area

Occupancy. We arrived on May 4 for 7 days. First two days 20 guest. The weekend there was 6 of us. By the following Tuesday total was back up to 20 or 22 with more arrivals due on Thursday. The staff and resort made Mothers Day special with a flower and T-shirt for the ladies. Also, Atlantic salmon was a special addition to the dinner menu that night.

Booze. Lots of the typical rum drinks. There were some good whiskies. I drink Walker Black there was none. When I asked it took a day or so but it became available.

Evening entertainment. Some of the usual stuff fire guy and Big Momma. There were several evenings with musicians that were very good. Not just Reggie but Oldies, Easy Listening, Kenney Rodgers and some country. The guest enjoyed this quite a bit.

Thing’s that need to be mentioned. We had booked an Ocean view and were upgraded to a beachfront. 

 Our return trip to the airport was by Private car very nice.

We walked over to SuperClubs Trelawney Resort to visit Carl, Tamika and Ann Marie Goffe, very old friends from Braco. Nice looking.but!!! No way would I stay, KIDS, NOISE way to many people that do not know what AN is.

Summary. There are a limited number of resorts that offer AN. I hope N can make a go of it. I will be keeping track and may return in November for Thanksgiving. As with most vacations we made new friends and had an enjoyable time. For those that recognize us from the trip report: I hope you all made it home safe and sound.

PS Gym has 2 Treadmills, 3 bikes, and weight machines.

The Resort.  Arrival and check-in were handled quickly.  There was no bellman, however the GM himself came out and got our bags and the tennis pro/Entertainment Coordinator took us to our room and then on a tour of the resort.  It eased some of the irritation and frustration of the transportation adventure.   They were very gracious and we felt quite at home.  The buildings are  all wood frame, two stories and in close proximity to each other.  Oceanfront buildings are only about 20 yards from the surf , but everything is very close.  There are 96 rooms.  Tropical vegetation is mature and beautiful.

The rooms are really nice.  They are knotty pine inside and the second story rooms have vaulted ceilings.  Amenities include large closet, large bathroom (with all the normal supplies), balconies and plenty of space.  Each room has a refrigerator, hair dryer and king-sized beds with a mosquito netting (if you want to leave the windows open).  If you have an ocean front room you can hear the surf pounding all night long.   Our room also included two day beds and a third on the balcony.  There is a coffee maker in the room with a stock of coffee and teas.

Room servicing was exceptional.   There were plenty of towels and they also provided turn-down service each evening and fresh towels.

From Negril Beach Village to Hedonism II and the Naked Truth

I have posted this before, but I thought it was worth repeating.
History of Negril and Hedonism II

Below is a excert from the Lonely Planet about Negril. Hard to believe that Hedonism II has been open that long. We have clients that have been to the resort over 100 times as well as the original owners of Go Classy Tours.

Only in 1959 was a road cut to Negril, launching the development of what was then a tiny fishing village. Electricity and telephones came later. The sleepy beachfront village soon became a popular holiday spot for Jamaicans. About the same time, hippies and backpackers from abroad began to appear. They roomed with local families or slept on the beach, partook of ganja and magic mushrooms, and generally gave Negril its laid-back reputation. In 1977 the first major resort – Negril Beach Village (later renamed Hedonism II) – opened its doors to a relatively affluent crowd seeking an uninhibited Club Med–style vacation. Tales of Hedonism’s toga parties and midnight nude volleyball games helped launch Negril to fame. By the mid-1980s Negril was in the throes of a full-scale tourism boom that continues today. (The early days of tourism in Negril are regaled in Banana Shout, a humorous novel by local hotelier Mark Conklin concerning the escapades of an American draft dodger who moves to Negril.)
